The Irish Veterans Memorial Project is an Irish Veteran’s charity, registered in Ireland, and raising much-needed funds to create an Historical Research Centre and physical Memorial to all Irish men and women who served, at home and abroad, from roughly 1900 to the present day. You can help by participating in the Dublin City Marathon on Monday 29th October 2007 - either running or walking (the course is open for 8 hours to facilitate walkers). Official Marathon details are available at: www.dublincitymarathon.ie and the official closing date for entries is 5pm (Irish time) on Monday 8th October. If you would like to run for Irish Veterans, or you have any other fundraising ideas, email dectwth@eircom.net (please put IRISH VETERANS in subject line).Volunteer Fundraiser sought
Proven Fundraiser sought for Irish Veterans charity (registered number CHY14643). Must be capable of working on own resources until such time as results come on stream. Would suit newly retired, or person with interest in Veterans affairs.
Irish Veterans Memorial Project (aka Irish Veterans Historical Research Centre Ltd) is a registered Irish charity dedicated to creating a national memorial to those Irish men and women who served in forces outside, and including, the Irish Defence Forces from, roughly, 1900 to the present day. A site has been found in Kiltoom, south Roscommon where we plan to renovate a disused 19th century church as a Memorial and Research Centre (see photos elsewhere on this website). For more information, contact Declan Hughes at dectwth@eircom.net (please put IRISH VETERANS in subject line).Graveyard Cleanup 8/9 September 2007
Every September we have an organised cemetery cleanup weekend at the church site in Kiltoom, and this brings a number of Veterans to strim and rake the grounds, and to generally tidy up the area surrounding the church. Volunteers are now needed for the weekend of 8th and 9th September 2007. Bring tools and refreshments for a healthy day out. Kiltoom is about 3 miles outside of Athlone, on the Athlone - Roscommon N61 road. Immediately you pass DALY’S Tavern (on left hand side), turn left off the N61 on to the Curraghboy road and pull in to the right after about 20 yards. Church can be seen over the wall. Please contact us in advance and let us know how many might be coming. Email dectwth@eircom.net (please put IRISH VETERANS in subject line). The Annual Graveyard Cleanup is only part-funded by Roscommon County Council. If you would like to assist with a donation toward the cleanup, please send your cheque to: Brendan Dodd (Treasurer), Irish Veterans Memorial Project, Capel Chambers, 119 Capel Street, Dublin 1, Republic of Ireland.Archive Project
Irish Veterans Memorial has begun compiling lists of Irish men and women and the forces they served with. We do this by asking Veterans or, in the case of deceased Veterans, their families, to fill in a Veterans Information Sheet, which captures a person’s service record. This we keep on file which will one day become a resource for researchers into Irish military history, emigration patterns etc. Information Sheets are available on request, and may be photocopied as needed. Information Sheet may also be downloaded elsewhere on this site. Email dectwth@eircom.net (please put IRISH VETERANS in subject line), or send request to: Irish Veterans Memorial Project, Capel Chambers, 119 Capel Street, Dublin 1, Republic of Ireland.Gravesite Project
IVMP has also begun an embryonic project regarding Irish Veterans gravesites. We would ask everyone to take a number of photographs of an Irish Veterans gravesite you may know about, or one you might come across when travelling. Many US and UK Veterans have distinctive grave markers which usually give a brief military history of the deceased. This, we feel, is another resource for future researchers. Irish Defence Force Veterans have no such special headstone, and are thus more difficult to identify. Local knowledge is therefore, invaluable. If possible, please take one photograph of the gravesite (including headstone), and one close-up (readable) of the headstone. On a separate sheet, please tell us where the grave is located (cemetery, town land, village, county, country etc). Send photographs & information to: Gravesite Project, Irish Veterans Memorial Project, Capel Chambers, 119 Capel Street, Dublin 1, Republic of Ireland.
